Powderpost Beetles (Lyctidae, and Anobiidae)

Back in the eighteen hundreds nearly every home in New England suffered from powder post beetle infestation. Fortunately they no longer exist at this epidemic level, though many houses still suffer with the problem. Their telltale sign is the numerous pin sized exit holes they leave behind in infested wood. Typically, the damage occurs in damp areas like basements, crawl spaces and garages. An active infestation will feature a light colored powder which spills out of the small exit holes they excavate. Often times this powder will accumulate on floors in very small piles. Treatment methods include the use of borates (a naturally occurring material) which is applied to the infested areas as a liquid. The borate material is absorbed into the wood, which in turn provides long term protection against this pest as well as many other wood destroying pests.
